Before we walked away with it, a young woman working the vendor booth dashed out to help us with it. We thought she was just be extremely polite, helping us to find a place to eat, but she was actually going to cook our lunch for us. The box lunch was a self-heating meal. It has a heating pack that activates when exposed to water, creating heat and turning the water into steam. There is a bit to do to get it ready to go.
You have to unwrap the heat pack and it back onto the water bag...
It comes with a utensil pack that is a spoon on one side and a knife blade on the other. She used the knife blade to open the rice...
Then open the sauce pack and pour it on top of the rice...
Now we're ready to cover it up and cook...
Cover tightly...
Pull the tab to rip open the water pack...
It starts to steam. The sudden pressure might make the top pop off!
It takes about 8-10 minutes to fully heat. It tasted a lot like some sort of Chinese food kit from the freezer section at the grocery store, like the stuff that Stouffer's makes.
As we were eating, we watched another helper coach some people to prep their box lunches.
When it started the sudden steaming, it startled them some:
A few minutes later, a young man and two other men joined us at our table. I think the other two were his father and grandfather. A helper hadn't come along them. We coached them as best as we could with gestures.
While their food was heating, the young man wanted to take our picture, and we reciprocated.
